Everything was overwhelming, suffocating. I felt humiliated, and though escaping this marriage now seemed utterly implausible, I had at least expected to meet the so-called "man"—only to be greeted by two elderly figures instead. Reality settled in like a weight on my chest. There was no way out. I was trapped on the edge of an abyss, a lethal one. Either way, it would be my downfall, my ruin.
